Welcome to the beautiful Bunya Mountains
When you come to the Bunya Mountains, you aren’t just entering a National Park full of natural wonder.
You’re walking back in time. Back to when Australia had just broken away from Antarctica, when Queensland still had active volcanoes, and much of the state was covered in dense rainforest. The beautiful Bunya Pine is a very ancient species of conifer which evolve during the Jurassic period, when dinosaurs ruled the planet.
The Bunya Mountains are a precious, unique remnant of Queensland’s biodiversity, preserved by its rugged slopes, and a cool, wet microclimate which allows rainforest to still flourish.
Every three years Indigenous Australians from all along eastern Australia, gathered in the mountains to feast on the delicious kernels of the football-sized Bunya nuts.
Today, Australians and visitors from overseas come to the mountains to relax, to explore, to find a refuge of unequalled peace and serenity. Whether they want four star luxury, or prefer a simple tent, all who come marvel at the wildlife, the magnificent trees, and the sounds of native birds from dawn to dusk.
There are no dogs here, no domestic pets. All you’ll hear at night are the frogs, the cicadas, and the weird cries of boobook owls. Sunsets are astonishingly lovely, dawn rises to the whistles and chatter of parrots and fairy wrens. Wallabies are everywhere you look, and are endlessly entertaining. Late autumn, you can see fireflies, and in the winter, we sometimes even have snow.
Spend a few days up here and you’ll feel like you’ve shed your old skin, and emerge refreshed and ready for whatever your normal life offers.
